How Long Does Diesel Fuel Last?

Under ideal storage conditions, diesel can usually remain stable for about 6 to 12 months.

Through proper maintenance, the use of stabilizers, filtration and fuel tank management, its service life can often be greatly extended, far more than two years.

But the reality that most companies don’t want to mention is:

Diesel will begin to change as soon as it leaves the refinery.

Oxidation begins, moisture accumulates, condensate is formed, and pollutants spread accordingly. Over time, the originally clean fuel oil will gradually turn into oil sludge; this oil sludge will not only damage the fuel injector and block the filter, but also cause your backup power supply system to fail and stop at the most critical moment.

What exactly causes the deterioration of diesel?

Oxidation

Diesel will react naturally with oxygen over time. As the fuel oxidizes, paint films, sediments and colloids are produced, which hinders the flow of fuel oil and blocks the filter.

Water Contamination

Condensation inside the fuel tank is a major problem, especially in humid southern regions such as Georgia and Florida.
